Nexium and Prilosec linked to Kidney Disease

Medications like Prilosec and Nexium are highly popular medications that belong to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs work by “inhibiting” or stopping the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Generally, Proton Pump Inhibitors are used to treat numerous stomach and gastrointestinal issues. Unfortunately, recent studies have associated the use of Proton Pump Inhibitors like Nexium and Prilosec with a significantly increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal failure.

According to researchers in the Jan. 11, 2016 edition of the highly regarded journal JAMA Internal Medicine, more than 15 million people use prescription PPIs, yet researchers have warned that up to 70 percent of these patients could be treated with a different medication, and up to 25 percent of those patients who have been using PPIs for a long time, could stop using the medication without redeveloping the same problems. The study authors also warn that patients who use PPIs are 20 percent to 50 percent more likely to develop CKD than non-users and of those who do use these drugs, those who take two doses per day had a 46 percent increase in the risks of developing CKD while those who took one dose each day were 15 percent more likely.*
